The maiden voyage of the London Company's journey to the New World had a ship named Mayflower. It popularly transported the English Puritans which is currently known as the Pilgrims, from the place of Plymouth to the New World in the year 1620. There were about 102 passengers, and 30 crew boarding the said ship. The Pilgrims were required to sign the Mayflower Compact before they left the ship and before they will establish their Plymouth Colony.

To get people to come to

the New World, The London Company established the

headright method, which provided land to anyone

who paid their own passage, or the passage of others

to the settlement. The headright system produced

large tobacco plantations, but this created conflict

over land with the natives as the settlers took more

land for tobacco production. Tobacco growers gained

more land through the headright system, and also

gained workers by paying for the passage of

indentured servants (servants who worked for a

period of time in exchange for passage to the New

World). However, by the end of the 1600s, African

slaves became the workforce. To try to make the

colony as democratic as possible and give the colonists

a voice in the government, The London Company also

established the House of Burgesses (1619). This

assembly followed the political tradition of the Magna

Carta, England’s guarantee of basic rights.
