Life in the Soviet Union before 1991 contained the great famine in 1932-1933 where millions died from starvation.  The secret police terrorized officials and the public.   1 936-1938 was the great purge where 600,000 citizens were killed.  Millions more were deported, and put into concentration camps.  by 1948 the communist had installed pressure in Europe toward the contries that U.S.S.R. had liberated from Nazi control.  The Americans and British feared the spread of communism across Europe.
