why are chromosomes visible during mitosis but not at all other times?

 Chromosomes are visible at any time but are most easily seen through a simple microscope when they meet at the plate during the metaphase stage of mitosis because the chromosomes are jumbled together and then form the traditional X-shape. 

They are easy to see because a single strand of DNA from H. sapiens is about 6 feet long!
