let x be the first number and y be the second number
the trick is seeing what the problem says
2X-8=Y
and
X+Y=19
since the first equation is already solved for Y substitute into the second
X+2X-8=19
3X=27
X=9
19-9=10
Y=10
the first number is 9 and the second is 10
