I do not believe that they were exercising their 1st amendment right to protest and here is why: The first amendment gives the right to peaceful protest, but the minute that protest becomes violent, it it no longer legal. Had rioters remained peaceful at their pro Trump rally, it would have been 100% protected by the constitution.
