Herman Melville shows humans as being irrational a lot of the time. As in, we let our emotions take over, and do things without thinking. Is melville portraying that in the line above? Tell me why you think so.

Yes I think that he is I mean hate is a very strong word and he may be being irrational because he feels betrayed or hurt. In other words letting his emotions take over.
