Let x > 0 be irrational, then 1 − x is also irrational, and the sum of these twoirrationals is one, which is rational. The question is much harder if you ask under what circumstances adding two irrational numbers produces an irrational. It is near impossible if you then substitute transcendental for irrational! Hope it helps
