Ovaries are a part of the reproductive system and endocrine system. People who have ovaries produce 2 major hormones there. First there’s estrogen which is released in high levels at the start of puberty. Estrogen first causes the production of eggs. It also promotes secondary sex characteristics such as body hair, changes in body proportions. Progesterone is the other hormone. This hormone helps to regulate the menstrual cycle.
The ovaries produce the egg cells, called the ova or oocytes. The oocytes are then transported to the fallopian tube where fertilization by a sperm may occur.
