In about 1816, a young man named Shaka became the new ruler of the Zulu people, then a small
tribe in the eastern part of South Africa. He soon began training his army in new methods of fighting,
as well as in the use of a new type of spear that he had invented. A formidable warrior, Shaka
successfully built and led large forces to slaughter his enemies. He ultimately built a Zulu nation of
about 250,000 people, decimating many rival groups in the process. Though his reign lasted only ten
years, he caused the deaths of more than two million people and impacted the subsequent history of
South Africa
