Waves are made by storms. The storms don't have to be close, just close enough to to make the waves. Also the moon helps.

The "energy" is actually gravity. When the moon is on one side of the Earth, this causes high tidal waves. Meanwhile, the other side that is morning would have low tides. The gravity belongs to the moon. Hope this helps.
