For equation 1, subtract 2x from both sides. For equation 2, add 3x to both sides.

1)  -2x + y = 5

2)  3x + y = -5

Subtract equations from one another 

-5x = 10

Divide both sides by -5.

x = -2

Plug in -2 for x in the first equation.

y = 2x + 5

y = 2(-2) + 5

Simplify.

y = -4 + 5

y = 1
