One significant barrier in using flame testing for identification purposes is that the test cannot differentiate all of the enzymes. Secondly, the lighting for each test is different. This can cause mistakes in reading the results. Lastly, there is a high probability with flame testing for outside contaminants to be in the results. This would also cause errors in reading the results.

Flame test is a common analytical method in which an aliquot of the solution of a substance is held over a flame and the color imparted to the flame serves as a means of identifying the cation present.

May cations can be identified through the unique color that they impart to a flame. This is of utmost importance in analytical chemistry.

However, there are many issues associated with flame test such as;

  • Presence of impurities: When impurities are present in the test sample, the color imparted to the flame may not be clear. It may become more dull than expected leading to confusion in interpreting the results of the test.
  • Low concentration of cation: Flame tests may be ineffective when the concentration of the cation is low. A color may not be imparted to flame due to low concentration of the cation
  • More than one element may give the same color of flame: Some elements impart the same color to flame. For example, both lithium and strontium impart red color to flame
