By saying "tribute in New Spain" the first thing that comes to mind is the so-called real tribute paid by the inhabitants of the Indian villages. In its final form, in the eighteenth century, it mounted a weight and a half fanega of corn per year. But this simple description does not reveal a complex reality, difficult to summarize in a few pages. In addition, the same tributaries that suffered this burden faced others that were not called "tribute" but in essence they were, and, on the other hand, those who formally were not "tributaries" -including the Spaniards-also had to pay taxes.
Within the colony of Mexico, the clergy and the rulers (Vireyes) did not pay taxes.
