The volume of the top part of the cake is 384 cubic in.
The volume of the bottom part of the cake is 768 cubic in.
If you add both of those together, you get 1,152 cubic in.

Volume = Length x Width x Height
Find the volume of the top stack of cake
12 x 8 x 4 = 384
Now find the second volume
16 x 12 x 4 = 768
Add together
768 + 384 = 1152
