Let's say adult tickets = x and student tickets = y

(1) x + y = 429

The number of student tickets sold is twice the number of adults tickets sold, therefor y = 2x
Now if we substitute this into equation (1), we get:
x + 2x = 429
3x = 429
x = 143
Therefor the number of adult tickets sold is 143
